Title
Journal Title
  • Enter as much of the title as you know, starting at the beginning.
  • Omit initial article (a, an, the, der, el, l', la, etc.) and any quotation marks:
         encyclopedia of the ancient
         journal of forensic med
         rouge et le noir not Le Rouge et Le Noir
         sir she said not "Sir!" she said
  • Title searches do not retrieve individual articles found in journals.
Keyword
  • Looks for words anywhere in the bibliographic record; use distinctive terms.
  • Use and, or, not to combine search terms, or use quotes for a phrase or hyphenated word:
         chaucer and marriage
         "global warming"
         "co-operation"
  • Use ? to truncate:
         child? finds child, children, childhood, etc.
         labo?r finds labor, labour, laborer, etc.
  • Use parentheses to group search terms or synonyms:
         (child? or teen?) and "reading disability"
  • Use the Guided Keyword tab for additional search options, including ISBN and ISSN.
  • Use field codes to make a search more precise:
         nkey hawthorne and tkey scarlet
Limits
  • Can only be used with Keyword and Title searches.
  • Quick Limit: retained between searches until re-set to "None".
  • Pre-set Limits: set multiple limits (date, language, format, etc.) before entering search terms.
  • Post Limits: limits may also be applied to the results of a title or keyword search.
  • Clear Limits: remove pre-selected limits by clicking on the Clear Limits button.
Author (last name,
first name)
  • For individuals, enter last name first:
         twain mark
  • Enter names of organizations or groups:
         national academy of sciences
Subject Heading
  • Enter a standardized subject heading.
         Library of Congress examples:
              indians of north america
              sontag susan
              women france history
         Medical Subject Heading example:
              heart artificial
  • If you don't know the authorized heading, try a Keyword Search.
Call Number
Browse
Exact
  • Use punctuation and spaces in Call Number searches:
         ps477.5 .b37 r36
         812c59 db6
  • Use Call Number Browse for Library of Congress call numbers.
  • Use Call Number Exact for all other call numbers (Dewey Decimal numbers, Avery call numbers, etc.).
  • If in doubt, use Call Number Exact.
Keyword with
relevance ranking
  • Finds records containing all of the search terms.
  • Use quotes for adjacent terms and ? for truncation:
         "south africa?" parliament?
  • Do not use Boolean operators and, or, not to combine terms.
Author
(results grouped
by title)
  • Use for prolific authors and composers, in order to group together titles published in multiple versions:
         bach johann s
Title (anonymous
works, series)
  • Use for works that have no identifiable author:
         arabian nights
         bible
  • If a work has an identifiable author, use an Author or Title search.
